SR:UK :: Modifying guide for Under Body Neons on Street Racers.
Under Body Neons.
As seen in the movie "the Fast and the Furious" on those wicked looking Honda Civics, these Neons, fitted underneath your car, give that cool glow in a range of colours including red, blue, purple and green.

When fitted correctly, Neons can look great at night but be sure to get them well underneath the car so the tube isn't visible. The effect is so much better.

Are Underbody Neons Legal?

The legal situation is a gray area where underbody neons are concerned.

Strictly speaking the laws on lights fitted to your car stipulates white at the front, amber on the sides and red at the rear. The idea of underbody neons is to have a coloured glow as opposed to a beaming light source. So in theory, if it's just the glow you can see and NOT the tubes, then you should be fine.

However, some Police authorities consider them unsuitable for road use so the ideal answer is to have your neons rigged through a seperate switch where they can be turned off when requested by a police officer.

The Police do have the option to issue you with defective vehicle notice, which means you will have to re take your MOT at an approved testing station. So be courteous to the Police if they stop you.

Fitting Under Body Neons.
Underbody neons are a bit more complex than a gear knob. But with some drill skills and rudimentary electronics you should be ok. If not get a professional auto electrician to do it.
  1. Unpack them and check everything is there.
  2. Lay the neon's out and test them before fitting them to your car
  3. Offer the tube against the car to make sure it will fit and that the cables can be routed with out snagging
  4. Using the cool self drilling/tapping screws provided attach the tubes to the underneath of the car with the fittings supplied. On the longer ones use three clips if possible.
  5. Using a soldering iron (or blow touch, be careful with the flame as fuel and brake lines run underneath the car, not to mention the fuel tank) twist then solder the wires together from tube to tube. Don't forget to put the plastic tube over one end first!
  6. Don't forget that the tubes get joined in a circle! one after the other. You should aim to start and finish where you are mounting the transformer!
  7. Slide the plastic tube over the join and tape at both ends to waterproof the join.
  8. If you are mounting the transformer inside the car drill a hole through the underside taking care not to hit the fuel tank or any wiring looms or fuel/brake lines. If you can, use a rubber grommet in the hole to stop the cable chaffing on the body
  9. Next mount the transformer in a safe dry place on bare metal (needed for the earth connection). You can rub the paint off with sandpaper to provide a good earth. Run the red wire to the positive (red) terminal on the battery using the fuse holder provided and mount the switch somewhere safe.
  10. Join the transformer to the tube wired as before.
Fusion tubes are some of the brightest available. You can buy Fusion neon's from our shop. You can fit these with a jack instead of a ramp, but if you do get someone to spot for you in case the jack fails. Ideally use axle stands as well as a jack.

Total fitting time was approx 45 mins.

Allow 2 hours if not using a ramp
